Fieldnotes
When school went back online in Winter of 2022 I had the opportunity to travel Paris and study there. It was my first time travelling by myself, and I wanted to capture the sounds of the city and the emotions tied to each place I saw. Over three weeks I collected field recordings from different locations around the city, built a map of the sounds in Max MSP, then used convolution to blend each raw recording with old music I've created over several years.
The practice of sitting in each place for long periods of time and just listening and sketching forced me to be present in a new way. I wanted to capture the idea of the absence of time and the past, present and future (memories) meeting to create something new. A slider allows the user to choose the level of convolution. When the slider is pushed all the way to the left (labelled ‘sound’), they will hear the pure raw recording. When pushed all the way to the right (labelled ‘emotion’), they will hear the recording completely convoluted with the chosen music file (ie. convolution levels are at 100%).
